Terms of Use

These Terms govern your use of the Close Reader app and this website (the “Service”), provided by Ilia Ilinskii PR Novi Sad, Mite Ruzica 3, Novi Sad, Serbia (“we”, “us”). By using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.

1. The Service

Close Reader is an e-book reader with AI features: word translations and meanings in context, reminders about characters and places, explanations of passages, and a chat about the book. Close Reader is currently in beta, distributed through Apple TestFlight and Google Play testing. Features may change, be limited or be temporarily unavailable, and beta versions may contain errors.

2. Who can use it

You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to these Terms on your behalf.

3. Your account

You can use Close Reader without an account. If you create one, keep access to your email or sign-in method secure: you are responsible for what happens in your account. You can delete your account at any time in the app (Settings → Account → Delete account).

4. Your books and content

Close Reader doesn’t sell or provide books, except a few public-domain samples. You may import only files you have the right to use, and you must not use the Service to break copy protection (DRM) or infringe anyone’s rights.

You keep all rights to your files, notes and other content. You allow us to store, copy, sync and process your content only as needed to provide the Service to you, including sending passages to our AI provider when you use an AI feature (see the Privacy Policy). We don’t use your content for any other purpose.

5. AI features

  • AI answers are generated automatically and may be inaccurate, incomplete or out of context. Check anything important against the book or other sources. They are not professional (for example, legal, medical or academic) advice.
  • “No spoilers” mode limits what the AI receives to the part of the book you have read. It greatly reduces the risk of spoilers, but we can’t guarantee that an answer will never reveal or guess something from later in the book or from the model’s general knowledge.
  • AI features have usage limits, which we may change. You must not try to get around them, for example by automating requests or resetting identifiers.
  • You must not use the AI features to create unlawful, harmful or infringing content.

6. Acceptable use

You must not misuse the Service. In particular, you must not interfere with its operation or security, access it by automated means other than the app, access other users’ data, reverse engineer it except where the law allows, or use it to break the law.

7. Prices and paid features

Close Reader is free during the beta. If we introduce paid features, they will be sold through the App Store or Google Play, whose terms govern payment, renewal and refunds. We will show the price and what it includes before you buy, and paid plans will not change these Terms without notice.

8. Our rights

The app, its design, name and logo belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the app on devices you own or control, in line with these Terms and the rules of the store you got it from.

9. Third-party services

The Service relies on third parties, such as app stores, sign-in providers and our hosting and AI providers. Their terms may also apply to you, and we are not responsible for services we don’t control.

10. Disclaimer

To the extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, including fitness for a particular purpose and uninterrupted or error-free operation. Keep your own copies of your books; we are not a backup service.

11. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential damage, lost profits or lost data, and our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or 50 EUR.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for damage caused intentionally or through gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, or any liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law, and nothing limits your mandatory rights as a consumer.

12. Suspension and termination

You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access, in whole or in part, if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms or if required by law; where reasonable, we will tell you first. We may also discontinue the Service, giving reasonable notice where possible.

13. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. We will post the new version here and, for significant changes, tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. If you keep using the Service afterwards, the updated Terms apply.

14. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Serbia. Disputes will be resolved by the competent court in Novi Sad, Serbia. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country of residence and may bring a claim in its courts where the law allows.

15. Apple App Store

If you downloaded Close Reader from the Apple App Store, these Terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support, is not responsible for the app or for any claims relating to it (including product liability, legal compliance or intellectual property claims), and, if the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, which may refund the purchase price, if any; Apple has no other warranty obligation. You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo and are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
